Early voting starts today for the November 2nd general election. Voters are being asked to decide on eight amendments to the Texas constitution. Several cities in north Texas are also having bond elections or city council elections.

Two of the constitutional amendment elections deal with issues that came up during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

Proposition 3 would prohibit the state or local government agencies from limiting or shutting down religious services. Some local health authorities urged limits on in-person attendance at religious services in 2020 as a way to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Proposition 6 would allow nursing home residents to designate someone as an essential caregiver. Nursing homes would not be allowed to deny that person entry into the facility. Many nursing homes stopped allowing visitors in 2020 before the development of the COVID-19 vaccine in order to limit the spread of the virus.

A full list of the proposed amendments is on the web site of the Texas Secretary of State .

In north Texas, Lewisville, Richardson, Sachse, Wylie and Tarrant County are all holding bond elections. The City of Mesquite and the Highland Park ISD are both holding elections for voters to confirm the property tax rate. Mesquite and Glenn Heights are both holding elections for places on the city council. Voters in Watauga will be asked to decide if the city should allow the sale of alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption.
