The City of Fort Worth has announced that former Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia will become the next Fort Worth Police Chief.
Garcia returns to North Texas after spending several months working at the City of Austin.
“Garcia, who is currently serving as Assistant City Manager in Austin, took part in a process that included more than 50 applicants from across the country,” the City of Fort Worth said in a statement.
More details are expected during a scheduled news conference Friday involving Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker and City Manager Jay Chapa.
Chief Garcia is expected to be present as well.
Garcia spent several years as the Dallas Police Chief until his sudden departure toward the end of last year. He returns to the Metroplex in just less than a month from his departure for Austin.
During Garcia's time in Dallas, city leaders credited him with reducing crime and improving morale in the department.
Before Dallas, Garcia was police chief for San Jose, California from 2016 to 2021
There was a slight hiccup during the interviewing process where some Fort Worth City Council members were concerned about the timing of Garcia’s application.
The City of Fort Worth said in a statement that nothing out of the normal process occurred.
Garcia will become Fort Worth’s 28th police chief.
