ERCOT is seeking bids from power producers to increase its reserves in case of record demands this upcoming Winter.
ERCOT is looking to add upwards of 3,000 MW (megawatts) for the winter 2023-24 peak load season.
Ever since the deadly Winter Storm 'Uri' in 2021 left millions of Texans powerless and freezing for days, ERCOT has been concerned about extreme weather. Their request for power bids wants to cover from December to February, seeking capacity from both dispatchable generation and demand response solutions.
They say they don't anticipate an energy emergency this winter, but they are trying to be prepared. “Our request to procure capacity in advance of winter is part of our continued commitment to maintain grid reliability and resiliency,” said ERCOT President and CEO Pablo Vegas.
ERCOT has powered through a record-breaking Texas summer, setting ten new power demands and calling for conservation a few times, but never once experienced any sort of collapse.
