Expanded medical marijuana law takes effect in Texas

The state's newly expanded medical marijuana law kicks in today.

Eligible Texans have access to medical marijuana through the state’s Compassionate Use Program (CUP) and is administered by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The new law expands who is eligible and doubles the amount of THC dispensed from one half of one percent to one percent.

Morris Denton is the CEO of Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation, the only Texas based licensee. Denton says under the old law the low dose THC was put in tinctures and the patient had to consume a lot of oils, which led to gastrointestinal issues.

Under the new law, anyone with any form of cancer or anyone diagnosed with PTSD is eligible. Previously, medical marijuana use was limited only those diagnosed with severe neurological disorders or terminal cancer.

Patients may get Low-THC cannabis prescribed if they are residents of Texas, has one of the approved medical conditions and is prescribed by a CUP registered physician.

There is no age limit for prescriptions. Patients under 18 may need a legal guardian.
