Volunteers at the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center loaded 500 cars with boxes of food Tuesday morning for a mobile pantry.

The center started working with the North Texas Food Bank during the pandemic, but the need has continued, with the line of cars stretching almost a mile when the pantry opened.

"So many people need help," one woman said. "You'd be surprised."

"It's a good thing because a lot of families need it," another woman said.

Both said they have been coming every month since the mobile pantries started. Volunteers included DPS troopers, workers at the Cuban Center and even Dirk Nowitzki.

"It's amazing. That's what we're here for: to help the community and bring joy to families," Nowitzki said. "I've seen some mothers dance in line. In the car, they give me a little shimmy."

Tuesday, volunteers also gave families a gift bag for Mother's Day. Students at Skyline High School gave out flower arrangements which were paid for by the Dallas Black Firefighters Association.

Forty-one mothers were also picked to receive gift packages that included salon trips, clothes and gift cards to Pappas Bros. Steakhouse and Nebraska Furniture March. They also received pink basketballs signed by Nowitzki.

"It's a good feeling to know there are people out there concerned about other people and want to help," one mom said.

The Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center says volunteers have loaded more than 30,500 meals into cars since the mobile pantries started.
