The federal government may be getting ready to fine Southwest Airlines for the thousands of flight cancellations last December.

Over two million travelers were affected around one of the busiest times for travel, the holiday season. The Dallas-based airline is aware the potential fine is coming but didn't have any estimates on how large it might be.

The U.S. Transportation Department let Southwest know on Friday that they were found to have failed to provide adequate customer service during the meltdown. That started with a winter storm before Christmas and spun out of control from there.

Southwest also acknowledges that it's still facing possible costs from lawsuits filed by customers and shareholders.
