A US District Judge in Fort Worth has struck down President Biden's executive order to cut thousands of dollars of student loan debt for millions of borrowers.
Ruling for the United States District Court's Northern District of Texas, Judge Mark Pittman ruled Thursday that the program appropriates Congressional authority to make law.
Pittman writes "in this country, we are not ruled by an all-powerful executive with a pen and a phone. Instead, we are ruled by a Constitution that provides for three distinct and independent branches of government."
The White House is expected to appeal.
In August, President Biden signed an executive order to cancel $20,000 in student loan debt for Pell Grant recipients and $10,000 for those without Pell Grants for those who have incomes of up to $125,000 per year.
