Feral hogs have been wreaking havoc across Texas for years, causing an estimated $500 million in annual damages as their population continues to surge.
The wild pigs recently tore up yards and damaged property at a school near Champions Park in Irving, adding to the growing list of destruction attributed to the invasive species. State officials estimate there are more than 2.5 million feral hogs in Texas, making them a persistent challenge for both urban and rural communities.
In rural areas, one of the more extreme and costly methods of controlling the hog population involves aerial hunting, with some companies offering paid helicopter hunts. Meanwhile, homeowners have resorted to trapping or installing electric fencing in an effort to protect their properties.
