The wind is seldom the friend of firefighters but there was an exception to the rule Wednesday in Dallas, where a fire broke out at the Speed Max Truck Stop on South Lancaster Road near Interstate 20.

Firefighters arrived to find the fire going strong behind the building and the flames were accelerated when they hit a pallet of boxes containing hand sanitizer, which has a large component of flammable alcohol.

The fire was so bad that commanders immediately called a second alarm. But the store was largely saved because the winds -- gusting around 30 mph at the time -- were blowing the fire away from the building. The rear of the structure was blackened but not heavily damaged.

The northwest winds did cause a grass fire downwind, but firefighters knocked that one down quickly.
