Football practices are underway at most Dallas ISD high schools, with 16 of the district’s 22 programs taking the field as the new season begins — and as summer temperatures continue to climb.

At Kimball High School, head coach Bam Harrison said excitement is high as his team looks to defend its district title.

As practices ramp up, so do concerns about player safety in the extreme heat. Dallas ISD head athletic trainer Brian Welch said the district is closely monitoring both the heat index and solar radiation levels at practice sites.

As part of those safety efforts, Dallas ISD prohibits outdoor practices during the hottest part of the day and adjusts schedules based on real-time heat data.

North Texas temperatures routinely top 100 degrees in August, and school districts across the region have implemented strict protocols in recent years to reduce the risk of heat-related illness during athletic activities.
