Former Dallas mayors and city council members are rallying against three proposed charter amendments ahead of the upcoming election. The coalition, which includes former Mayor Mike Rawlings, says the amendments, which cover police staffing levels and would allow lawsuits against city officials, would be detrimental to both taxpayers and the city’s governance.
On Saturday, Rawlings led a door-to-door campaign, urging voters to reject amendments S, T, and U.
"All three of these items are very dangerous for the taxpayers of Dallas," Rawlings said. "Their resources are going to be cut, their safety is not going to be better."
However, supporters of the amendments, including Pete Marocco from the group Dallas Hero, argued the proposals reflect widespread public sentiment.
"There's no question that the people of Dallas want reform. They want accountability, they want minimum police officers, that's what the law requires," he said. "They want the law to be enforced. There is no question about that."
The amendments will be decided by voters on Nov. 5.
