A former Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedic will not face charges for kicking an unarmed man when he was on the ground.

A Dallas County grand jury declined to indict 46-year-old Brad Cox after reviewing body cam video of the incident.

Back in 2019 while responding to a grass fire Cox kicked Kyle Vess, who was on the scene, several times after Vess threw something at him.

Vess' family hired a lawyer who pushed for Cox to be arrested and charged with assault, claiming Vess suffers from mental illnesses, had an existing brain injury, and was not a threat to Cox. They also pointed out that Cox had an MMA background. Cox's lawyers say there was no way for him to know Vess, who was homeless at the time, suffered from any mental illness.

Vess has filed a civil suit against the city and Cox.
