Federal assistance that made school meals free for all students is coming to an end this year.
"School meals are just critical to ensuring that kids have the nutrition they need to thrive in and out of the classroom," said Stacie Sanchez-Hare, director of the No Kid Hungry campaign. "We know that hungry kids cannot learn, because if you're hungry, you can't really think about much of anything else."
If families need federal assistance, they'll have to apply for it. And they'll have to meet certain income guidelines, too.
Some districts, like the Dallas ISD, are still able to offer free lunches to everyone. Others, like Fort Worth and Carrollton-Farmers Branch, are not extending the same service.
