Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The Buffalo hockey community is mourning the passing of Dale Hawerchuk, who had battled stomach cancer.
Hawerchuk came to the Sabres in a 1990 trade with the original Winnipeg Jets, who drafted him the first overall pick in 1981. He won rookie of the year in the 1981-82 season. His highest scoring output with Buffalo was in 1991-92 when he scored 98 points.
Hawerchuk signed with St. Louis after the 1994-95 season.

August 18, 2020 Hawerchuk was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001, and ten years later, enshrined into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame.
Hawerchuk was 57.
