The Parker County Sheriff's Office says back in July, Channing Kula, 36, had a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old boy inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the Brock High School football field.

Kula had been a seventh grade teacher at Brock Junior High School.

Even though 17 is the age of consent in the State of Texas, nearly all relationships between students and teachers in primary and secondary schools in the state are illegal, regardless of age.

The only extremely rare exceptions are if the teacher and student are legal spouses or if they're less than three years apart in age and began their relationship before the start of the teacher's employment.

Kula was arrested last week for improper relationship between educator and student, with bond set at $50,000.

The Brock ISD says it immediately placed Kula on administrative leave after learning of the incident, and Kula resigned from the district Monday.
