A Fort Worth city council member is facing criticism after posting a quote from conservative commentator Charlie Kirk that appeared to defend gun deaths as the cost of protecting Second Amendment rights.
Council Member Elizabeth Beck shared the quote late Wednesday on Facebook with the caption "Unfortunate." on Kirk's image. The post, which was later deleted, included Kirk’s words that read "Yes, people die from gun violence. It’s tragic. But that’s the price of freedom."
The post was also briefly shared on Beck’s Instagram account before being removed. Screenshots of both posts spread widely on social media.
Beck has not commented publicly.
“She is publicly celebrating the death of a young husband and father of two young children,” Tarrant County GOP Chairman Bo French said in a statement on his social media accounts, writing, “At a minimum, the Tarrant County Republican Party calls for her to be REMOVED from the City Council immediately.”
Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker released a statement on her social media, saying, "As elected officials and community leaders, we are held to the highest standard, and we owe it to the people we represent to always be above board. Yesterday we saw the worst example of this by one of my fellow Council Members, essentially condoning violence because of someone's political views. It is very clear that the killing of Charlie Kirk was a political assassination, and there is no justification for evil." She added, “I would beg you to look in the mirror and to see if you can find a better angel in there somewhere.”
