Fort Worth high school football team desperately trying to find opponent for Friday

A high school football team in Fort Worth wants just one thing this week -- an opponent.

The Atlas HomeSchool Rattlers had two straight opponents cancel their games against them.

Last week, Wichita Falls City View backed out for reasons unknown; and this week, Willow Park Trinity Christian Academy was forced to cancel.

"They let us know that they're down to about 15 kids due to injury," says Atlas Head Coach Chris Connaughton, "and so they just felt safety wise it was not in their best interest to play."

Connaughton says in the program's five-year history, they have never run into this situation.

"Even during the COVID year, we were able to find games with both URL and TAPPS teams," says Connaughton.

The latest cancellation could not have come at a more inopportune time.

"It's our homecoming week, which we had scheduled," Connaughton says. "All the players and the cheerleaders and parents and all that put time and effort into it, and to lose it at the last minute makes it really difficult."

Friday may be only two days away, but Connaughton is hoping that there's some team out there -- perhaps one of the many UIL programs which are on their bye week this week -- who will agree to play them on short notice.

"We'll play anybody that wants to play," says Connaughton. "We haven't shied away from playing anybody that's out there, whether we win or lose, but we just want to give the kids the opportunity to play."

If your team has players who would like some extra reps, contact Coach Connaughton by calling or texting 817-983-6239.
