The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. in the 3500 block of North Juliet Lane in the Summerfields subdivision, near Basswood Boulevard and North Riverside Drive. Members of the department’s Civilian Response Unit (CRU) — unarmed civilian employees who handle lower-level calls such as burglaries, evidence collection and report writing — were on scene when a man across the street opened fire with what appeared to be a rifle. One CRU employee was struck.
Officers returned fire as the suspect fled westbound on foot. The suspect, described as possibly armed, remains at large. Fort Worth police and SWAT teams continue to search the area, treating it as a possible barricaded-person situation with roadblocks in place.
The injured civilian employee was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital. He is awake, talking and in stable condition. Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker told CBS News Texas the employee is “miraculously doing well.” Police Chief Eddie Garcia added, “He was talking, he was moving, and by the grace of God, hopefully, with prayers, he’ll be OK.”
CRU members do not respond to active suspect calls or situations where violence is likely, and they carry no firearms. Officials have not released the employee’s name or further suspect description pending the ongoing investigation. No other injuries were reported.
Fort Worth police urged residents in the Summerfields subdivision to stay securely indoors while the search continues.
