FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD)- If you live in Fort Worth and you need a laptop for a few days, the Fort Worth Public Library has a deal for you, starting Saturday.
"In addition to lending laptops while people are visiting our locations, now they can check out laptops that are WiFi-enabled with cellular service," says Theresa Davis, Fort Worth Public Library spokeswoman.
The computers are Dell laptops powered by Windows, and they have Microsoft Office pre-installed.
Not that one would want to on a shared computer, but saving files on the laptop's local hard drive is disabled.
Users can, however, save their files on their own thumb drive or on a cloud drive.
The laptops are available at all 17 Fort Worth Public Library branches.
"Right now, we are launching with 44 laptops," Davis says, "thanks to funding from local donors through the Fort Worth Public Library Foundation and a grant fund from the Institute of Museum and Library Services."
Davis says there are no special requirements to check out a laptop.
"All adult Fort Worth library card holders are eligible, as long as they're in good standing, to check out these laptops or reserve them," says Davis.
The lending parameters for laptops are the same as those for other materials.
"Much like all our other materials, whether they're video games or WiFi hotspots, our laptops can be checked out for three weeks at a time," Davis says. "Then they can be renewed if nobody else is waiting for them."
While there is no fine for returning the laptop late, the library can remotely disable a past-due laptop.
When a borrower checks a laptop out, it will be as if it was brand new.
"Every time the laptop turns off, it completely reset back to the original settings," says Davis.
