The improvement of one Fort Worth roadway will require encroachment onto a city park.

A portion of Randol Mill Rd. east of the I-820 East Loop will be realigned to cut across the southern edge of Mallard Cove Park.

"The purpose of this project is really to mitigate stormwater overtopping on Randol Mill from approximately 200 feet west of Territory Trail to Golden Eye Lane," says Lauren Prieur with the city's transportation and public works department.

The purpose is to ensure that Randol Mill Rd. will remain passable in that area following a heavy rainstorm.

"This section of roadway will be realigned away from the creek, and the roadway will be elevated to remove it from the 100-year floodplain," says Prieur. "Two existing culvert crossings will be eliminated within this roadway realignment, and a new culvert that can convey that 100-year stormwater will be added."

The project will involve removing 16 trees.

"Those have all been identified by the city forester," says Richard Zavala with the city's parks and recreation department. "And all those funds have been paid by the project back into the tree city fund."

Zavala notes that the number of trees represents a very small portion.

"Most of the trees are down by the river," Zavala pointed out. "These are the ones up by the roadway and where the grading has to occur as they realign the road."

No park trails or roadways will be closed during construction, and the park will be restored to its original condition upon completion.
