GARLAND (1080 KRLD)- The City of Garland is holding a grand-opening ceremony for its new park for skateboarders this weekend.

Funding for the project was approved by voters in 2004 as part of a city bond package. The skate park at Rick Oden Park in Garland will be known as "The Boneyard".

"The skate park will offer street, and plaza-style skating, bowl features and a new learners or beginners area," said Garland Mayor Scott LeMay. It will cover 46,000 square feet, which will make it the second-largest skate park in Texas.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new park on Saturday. Many city leaders who spent years working on the project are happy to see it become a reality.

"The skate community transcends age differences, racial differences and economic differences, and that's so important," said former Garland City Council Member Richard Aubin.
