A Garland police officer is recovering, and a 24-year-old man is dead following a two-hour gun battle that involved more than 100 shots fired, authorities say.

Two Garland police officers responded to reports of gunfire just after midnight when they were ambushed by Bernardo Meres, police said. The officers’ patrol car was struck multiple times, but neither officer was injured.

Meres fled in a white truck and was located minutes later by another officer. Police Chief Jeff Bryan said Meres again opened fire, striking the officer’s vehicle.

The suspect later entered a home owned by his family. As officers attempted to evacuate residents, Meres emerged and took a shooting stance, police said. Officers fired, killing him at the scene.

A total of eight officers were involved in the incident. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
