Gas prices jump 30-cents overnight at many North Texas stations

North Texas drivers woke up Wednesday to higher prices at the pump, with many DFW-area gas stations raising regular unleaded by 30 cents overnight from $3.99 to $4.29 a gallon.

The statewide average climbed to $4.04, according to AAA data released Wednesday morning, while the national average reached $4.54. The Texas figure typically lags actual street prices by a few days, meaning many North Texas commuters are already feeling the full impact of the latest spike.

The surge comes against the backdrop of continued uncertainty tied to Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. military campaign against Iran that disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Crude prices have stayed elevated since the operation began in late February, pushing U.S. gas costs up more than $1.50 a gallon from early-February lows of around $2.55 in Texas.

The increases are hitting families, commuters and small businesses hard in a region where many residents drive long distances for work. Trucking and delivery companies say the higher diesel prices — now averaging more than $5.14 a gallon statewide — are adding to supply-chain costs that could eventually show up in grocery and retail prices.

AAA and GasBuddy analysts note that while Texas prices remain below the national average and far under California’s $6-plus levels, the rapid climb has erased months of relief that followed last year’s lower crude prices.
