When a good samaritan stopped to help an injured Mansfield Police Officer he didn't know he'd be saving his life and starting a friendship. He's this week's KRLD Difference Maker.
North Texan Donnell Maybury said something told him to take a different way to work on February 2nd.
What he later encountered was a Mansfield Police Officer Randy Watson , who was driving to work on his motorcycle .
"It was a no passing zone. It was on a little rise. At the top of the rise, I saw two headlights coming at me and I swerved to the right to try to end up in the ditch. The guy in my lane passing in a no passing zone t-boned me and crushed my leg off from the mid-thigh down," Randy said.
He was thrown about 125 yards from the crash scene.
"I heard a guy saying, 'Hey mister, this is going to hurt but I have to do it,'" Randy said. "And I said, 'Don't let me bleed out.'"
That man was Donnell Maybury. He'd witnessed the accident and had gone to look for Randy. When he found him, he took off his belt and made a tourniquet that likely saved Randy's life.
Randy was later able to get a hold of Donnell.
"I said, 'You don't know me but my name is Randy Watson and you saved my life Tuesday morning,'" Randy said.
The two met in person in an emotional meeting and are now friends.
"I honestly believe that this was a miracle," Randy said. He said his near death experience has brought him back to God and changed his life.
We're proud to call Donnell Maybury this week's KRLD Difference Maker.
Randy is getting a prosthetic leg and says he will be back to work soon.
