Governor Greg Abbott's plan to set up more checkpoints in south Texas is getting some push back from some industry leaders on the other side of the border.
Governor Abbott announced additional inspections on vehicles this week following the deaths of 53 illegal immigrants in San Antonio. He didn't say where the checkpoints would be, but he did say they would be further into the state and not right at the border.
The president of the Juarez Chamber industry tells Border Report he's worried the additional inspections will slow down the transportation of goods from Mexico. He pointed to Abbott's increased inspections back in April that snarled traffic at border crossings. Some economists say that cost the state nearly $4 billion.
Governor Abbott eventually did away with the additional inspections after reaching agreements with some Mexican state governors.
The chamber president says border factories are monitoring the situation and are prepared to send cargo through New Mexico to avoid Texas roads.
