The long-vacant Valley View mall site in Far North Dallas at LBJ Freeway and Preston Road has finally been brought back to life.
The "Midtown" project has broken ground on the first phase which will bring upscale apartments as well as restaurants, office space, green space, and retail.
Dallas City Councilwoman Cara Mendelsohn calls this another big win for the city.
"Everyone is moving to Dallas," Mendelsohn says.
"Dallas is on fire and the wins are racking up, and this is another big one."
The overall concept for the site is upwards of $4-billion.
The first $85-million phase has been made possible by private funding including a sizeable investment from Toyota and Panasonic.
"We're going to make the most important piece of real estate in Dallas functional, serviceable, and available to the community," Dallas City Councilman William Roth said.
Roth was recently elected to District 11 where the old Valley View Mall site is located.
Once completed, plans call for a rail connection between the "Midtown" project and neighboring Galleria Dallas to the west.
