A group hopes the former site of Shingle Mountain in south Dallas can be transformed in to a park. Tons of used shingles were dumped on the property in south Dallas before they were eventually removed earlier this year. The property is now owned by the City of Dallas.

The group Neighbors United has been working with the architecture firm HKS on a new plan for the site. They unveiled their design Thursday night.

"What happened there is not ok, and we've been working with them to create a vision for a gorgeous park that can serve in its place," said architect Erin Peavey. "Instead of the toxic waste that was there, you're going to see a splash pad for kids. You're going to see a large soccer area for both kids and adults. The area has beautiful for areas for people to walk and to walk their kids. The additional acres would have equestrian therapy with riding trails."

The site is still zoned for industrial uses, and supporters of the project also point to the need to remove some contaminated soil on the property. They're hopeful that officials at Dallas City Hall will rezone the property and support the management of the proposed park. Several non-profit groups in Dallas, including the Santander Foundation and the Dallas Stars Foundation, have offered financial support.

"We need funding for this park, and we also need to be bought in on this being transformed into a park for the city and for the neighbors in general," said Peavey.
