Some people in Dallas want to change the name of a street to honor a teen killed by a police officer over 40 years ago. Today a committee will begin the debate.
A nearly 6-mile stretch of road that runs through Southeast Dallas could be renamed in honor of Santos Rodriguez, a 12-year-old boy who was wrongfully detained and eventually killed by a Dallas police officer in 1973.
A city committee will debate whether to rebrand Jim Miller Road between Great Trinity Forest Way and Highland Road to Santos Rodriguez Road.
The boy was killed on July 24, 1973, during a Russian roulette-style interrogation by then-officer Darrell Cain. Reports say Cain was trying to force Rodriguez to confess to stealing $8 from a vending machine.
Many residents praise the idea as another step for the city to reckon with its past while others expressed concern over the financial impacts and unintended consequences a street name change might have for businesses and residents.
