There are growing worries about what happens if a measles exposure occurs in a North Texas school with low vaccination rates.
This follows the first measles case reported in Dallas County this week.
Dr. Jeffrey Kahn is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at Children's Health.
"We know that the virus has spread to many parts of Texas," Dr. Kahn said. "We know how contagious the virus is."
Dr. Kahn says once schools reopen, cases could skyrocket for months in low vaccinated areas.
"If the virus gets into one of these schools that has low vaccination rates, it's going to spread like wildfire," Dr. Kahn warned. "Igniting outbreaks for several months if not longer."
This week a woman in her mid-20s became the first known measles case in Dallas County.
