A Guatemalan National is the latest to be charged in connection with the migrant smuggling ring that led to the deaths of 53 in a sweltering trailer in San Antonio in 2022.
The Department of Justice has announced the indictment of a Guatemalan national who they say helped coordinate the human smuggling effort that is considered the deadliest attempt from the U.S.-Mexico border.
U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza says Rigoberto Mirnado-Orozco is charged with six counts of migrant smuggling resulting in death or serious injury. Mirnado-Orozco is the first person arrested outside of the country to face charges in the U.S. in connection with the investigation. Esparza said seven people have been arrested in the U.S.
