With the potential for subzero wind chills in the region, animal advocates are urging pet owners to be cautious.
Even if your dog loves the cold and may be built for it like Huskys, Saint Bernards but for others like Chihuahuas, the cold is just not it. Daniel Alvarado with Dallas Animal Services says some breeds are not built for this.
The extreme cold can put pets at risk for frostbite and hypothermia, especially during outdoor activities.
Here’s a quick guideline to keep your furry friends safe:
- Above 45°F: generally safe for all
- At 32°F: smaller or thin-coated dogs may need a jacket
- Between 20°F and 32°F: be extra cautious with small, senior, or thin-coated dogs.
- Below 20°F: Limit outdoor time to bathroom breaks only
