As an arctic blast moves into Texas and freezing temperatures loom, state and local transportation officials are stepping up preparations to protect major roads and highways across the region.

The Texas Department of Transportation has been pre-treating key thoroughfares with a brine solution — a mixture of salt and water designed to help prevent ice from bonding to pavement — and standing crews by for continuous monitoring once winter weather arrives.

TxDOT reports that treatment efforts have focused on high-traffic interstates, bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze first, and that work has involved multiple districts applying brine and other de-icing materials ahead of freezing conditions.

After storms develop, crews shift to 24/7 operations aimed at clearing ice and snow and keeping highways as safe and passable as possible, with priority given to major state routes and areas prone to slick spots.

Drivers are urged to check DriveTexas.org for current road conditions, give snow and ice equipment room to operate, and avoid unnecessary travel when conditions are hazardous.
