The Dallas Mavericks and head coach Jason Kidd have mutually agreed to part ways after five seasons, the team announced Tuesday evening. The organization will immediately launch a comprehensive search for its next head coach.
Kidd, a Mavericks champion as a player and Hall of Famer, was hired as head coach on June 28, 2021. Under his leadership, Dallas reached the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024. He compiled a 205-205 regular-season record and went 22-18 in the playoffs. This past season, the Mavericks finished 26-56 amid injuries and roster changes.
New Mavericks President Masai Ujiri addressed the decision directly in the team’s release. “Jason has had a meaningful impact on the Dallas Mavericks, both as a Hall of Fame player and as the head coach who helped lead this franchise back to the NBA Finals,” Ujiri said. “We are thankful for Jason’s leadership, his professionalism and his commitment to the team. In my short time here, I’ve developed an enormous amount of respect for what he has built. He will always be an important part of the Mavericks family.”

Ujiri added that the franchise believes this marks the right moment for a new direction as it aims for sustained championship contention. The team will evaluate its entire basketball operations staff during the search process. No timeline for hiring a replacement has been announced, and no further personnel moves were detailed Tuesday.
Kidd’s departure comes roughly two weeks after Ujiri was named president of basketball operations and alternate governor, signaling a fresh start for the franchise as it builds around young talent like rookie standout Cooper Flagg and veterans including Kyrie Irving.
