Monday is the third year Juneteenth has been a federal holiday -- and the Fort Worth woman who made it happen is joining a walk on the city's Historic South Side today.

The walk -- with Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth -- will start on Evans Avenue and Dashwood, just blocks from where the new 50,000-Square-Foot Juneteenth Museum will open its doors in 2025. Beginning at 10:45 a.m. Ms. Lee will walk the route alongside other dignitaries like Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker, Senator Cornyn and Jarred Howard, the CEO of the museum.

Other ways to mark this Juneteenth:
-- In Dallas, the African American Museum in Fair Park has unveiled a diverse lineup of events and exhibitions centered on African culture.

-- In Dallas, Double D’s First Juneteenth House Party runs today from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Juneteenth marks the date of June 19th in 1865 when word of the emancipation of black slaves first reached Texas.
