A Frisco man pulled the curtain back on his "real self" at the most inopportune time, and now he will pay the price.
A jury had enough sympathy for Artis Ray Martin that it decided not to convict him of murder for the December 2021 shooting death of Frisco High School student Chineye Jones.
Murder carried a possible life prison term. Instead, the jury found Martin guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter, which has a minimum of 2 years.
But then it happened.
The jury was to come back the next day to decide on punishment. That night Martin got on the phone and began badmouthing the jury in horrid ways, even tossing out the 'N-word' and telling the person on the phone how he intended to get high and drunk at home after getting out of prison.
Collin County Jail calls are recorded and the next day, during the sentencing hearing, prosecutors played the recording and the jury heard it all. They sentenced Martin to the maximum penalty for manslaughter, 20-years in prison.
