The life of a Dallas police officer who died 25 years ago has been remembered with full honors.

Sergeant Claude C.W. Standridge was shot on the job in 1972 and died in 1998. Only this year was his death linked to his wounds in that shooting.

Hired at Dallas Police in 1954, he made a traffic stop 18 years later and was shot in the face, neck and stomach. He returned to work, on light duty, before retiring on disability in 1990.

Now more than 50 years after the shooting Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia has declared his death to be in the line of duty.

Speaking at his memorial, Garcia said Standridge's daughter told him there was nothing Claude Standridge wanted more than to be a Dallas police officer. "I can tell you he will always be a Dallas police officer."

In May, Standridge's name was added to the Dallas police memorial devoted to those officers killed on the job.
