You may have noticed more police out than usual.
That's because many agencies step up patrol over the holidays to discourage people from driving drunk.
Garland Police Lieutenant Pedro Barineau says they want to talk about it in hopes it prevents people from making bad decisions.
"If you are going to go out and celebrate, if you do plan to drink, there are alternatives," Lt. Barineau said. "DWI is nothing new, unfortunately, but educating and talking about it something that we need to continually do."
If you're caught driving drunk, the fines alone could set you back $2,000 and that doesn't begin to cover court costs and lawyers' fees.
Several departments including the Texas Department of Public Safety have stepped up enforcement on the highways and roadways.
