Wilmer Hutchins High School will stay closed the rest of this week as police investigate Tuesday's shooting. An arrest warrant affidavit showed five people 18 and younger were hurt: Four were shot, a fifth had a leg injury; all five are expected to recover.
Dallas ISD says classes are cancelled Wednesday and Thursday. Friday and Monday were scheduled days off, so students will return next Tuesday. The district says couselors are available at the school, though.
After the shooting, Governor Greg Abbott said he had been in touch with Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde and Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez.
"I offered to support the school district families, students, and staff and to provide law enforcement with the tools they need to arrest the criminals involved and bring them to justice," Abbott wrote in a statement.
Abbott said Texas has provided $3 billion for school safety funding since he became governor in 2015. He said he wants lawmakers to approve an additional $500 million during this session.
Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett posted online she was "heartbroken" to learn of another shooting at Wilmer Hutchins a year after another shooting at the same campus.
In April 2024, a student was shot during a fight inside a classroom. That student survived, but other students staged a walkout several days later upset over security at the school.
"No child should fear for their life at school. No teacher should have to barricade a classroom door," Crockett wrote. "Let me be clear: this is not normal. This is not acceptable. Guns do not belong in our schools. Every student deserves to learn in a safe environment."
