The Lewisville ISD school board voted overwhelmingly Tuesday night to close five elementary schools, citing declining enrollment and reduced state funding.
The decision, announced during a public meeting, was met with frustration and anger from parents in attendance.
"The school board does not care about our children, they care about money," one parent said. "We said we'd take this fight to Austin, they don't want to take it to Austin, they want to have it right here."
Lewisville ISD is the latest North Texas district to shutter and consolidate schools. Similar actions have been taken by districts in Richardson, Plano, Coppell, and Irving, all grappling with similar issues.
The closures reflect a broader trend of urban and suburban districts navigating changing enrollment patterns and state education funding challenges.
