A student at a North Texas middle school has been diagnosed with measles, health officials say. It marks the first reported pediatric case in the region.

Collin County Health Care Services confirmed the child attends Willow Springs Middle School in Lucas, part of the Lovejoy Independent School District. Officials said anyone who was at the school on April 7 may have been exposed to the virus.

The health department is working closely with the school district to notify individuals who may have been in contact with the infected student.

The report comes amid growing concerns statewide. In a separate outbreak, two children in West Texas have died after contracting the measles, according to local health authorities.

Measles is a preventable disease, but cases have been rising in recent years due to declining vaccination rates. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, and a distinctive rash. Health officials urge parents to ensure their children are up to date on immunizations.
