For the first time since the idea was first raised by Presidential candidate Donald Trump, a majority of Americans support a wall at the southern border of the United States.

A new poll, conducted by Monmouth University, shows 53% of Americans registered support of a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

This shift marks the first time the idea of a southern border wall has gotten more than 50% approval from American citizens since the question was first posed in a 2015 poll.

Opposition to a border wall registered at 46%.

After Trump's election to the Presidency and throughout his only four-year term in office, wall support never climbed higher than 44% and dipped as low as 35% in some polls.

The upward trend of support for a wall tracks along with the amount of Americans who view illegal immigration as a major issue: 61% said it was a "very serious" problem with an additional 23% calling it "somewhat serious."
