A man convicted of a hate-crime murder in Dallas is sentenced to even more time behind bars.

Prosecutors say 39-year-old Anthony Paz Torres went to Omar's Wheels and Tires in Dallas in 2015 and opened fire. One person was killed. Prosecutors say he fired at three other people and then tried to run over someone with his car.

Torres pleaded guilty to federal hate crime charges in the case. Prosecutors say he intentionally targeted people at a Muslim-owned business. He had visited the business a few days before the shooting and made threats.

Torres was convicted on state murder charges and sentenced to 35 years in prison. His new federal sentence is 37 years in prison.

“Acts of Islamophobic violence that cause death and injury have no place in our country and run contrary to our values as Americans,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “This defendant is being held accountable for a violent and deadly hate-fueled shooting spree targeting innocent Muslim Americans. The Justice Department is firmly committed to confronting unlawful acts of bias-motivated violence, and stands ready, willing, and able to prosecute perpetrators who target victims because of their religion.”
