One man died early Wednesday morning after his truck became submerged in rapidly rising floodwaters beneath the I-635 overpass at Park Central Drive in North Dallas.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a 911 call shortly after midnight, reporting vehicles trapped in high water under the bridge. Dallas police officers helped the occupants of one of the vehicles reach safety before fire crews arrived.
Dallas Fire-Rescue said it launched two rescue boats into the water to attempt a rescue. One of the boats capsized, forcing first responders to swim to shore. The second boat could not reach the submerged vehicle because the currents were too strong.
Command then made the decision to pull first-responders from the water until water levels receded.
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall that led to flash flooding across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The National Weather Service had issued a Flash Flood Warning for Dallas County, which remained in effect until early Wednesday morning. Some areas reported over 4 inches of rain in just a few hours.
Authorities are reminding the public of the dangers of driving through flooded roadways, emphasizing the National Weather Service's safety slogan: "Turn around, don't drown."
