A man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in Garland after he crashed into two vehicles and then tried to carjack a driver at a nearby convenience store, police said.
Garland police responded around 3:30 p.m. May 3 to the area of Highway 66 and Dairy Road for a multi-vehicle crash with unknown injuries. Investigators say the suspect, driving a green passenger car, collided with two other vehicles on the roadway. All involved drivers then pulled into a gas station at the intersection.
There, the suspect attempted to forcibly take several parked vehicles in the lot but failed. He crossed Dairy Road on foot into an adjacent convenience store parking lot and approached a white Chevrolet Impala occupied by a driver, two adult women and five children.

During the attempted carjacking, a physical struggle broke out between the suspect and the Impala’s driver. The driver produced a firearm and shot the suspect. Officers arrived to find the man wounded. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
The driver who fired the shots stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. No charges have been filed against him as the investigation continues. Police have not released the suspect’s name, describing him only as a Hispanic male, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Garland Police Department. It occurred in a busy commercial corridor near major roadways, briefly disrupting traffic in the area while officers processed the scene.
