A man was found unresponsive by Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel Saturday as crews were putting out a house fire on the 6800 block of Day Street in the Southeast Dallas neighborhood.

According to Jason L. Evans, Dallas’ public information officer, Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the scene at 2:15 a.m. Saturday after a 911 call regarding a structure fire.

“When firefighters arrived at the one-story residence, they observed heavy smoke coming from the front of the home,” Evans said. Neighbors told first responders that a person might still be inside the building.

“So, attack teams deployed handlines and moved in for search and suppression operations,” Evans explained. “Fire had spread through a large part of the house by the time firefighters made entry, but they were eventually able to get it under control. Unfortunately, during the process, they found the unresponsive body of an adult male in a rear bedroom.”

The unresponsive male was confirmed deceased.

Evans said investigators believe the fire originated in the home’s kitchen area before spreading to multiple rooms in the house. It left behind significant damage throughout the structure.

Both the cause of the fire and cause of death were undetermined pending a final ruling as of early Saturday afternoon.
