The man who shot a DPS trooper near Haslet last Friday has not been charged with a crime, and there's a possibility that he might not be.

That's because an initial investigation indicates that he may have been acting in self-defense.

"Preliminary information suggests the individual may have discharged his firearm without knowing it was a law enforcement officer approaching his residence," DPS said in a statement Tuesday night.

The trooper, who DPS has identified as William Wallace, was in plain clothes and was driving an unmarked DPS-issued pickup truck.

DPS says Wallace is a special agent assigned to the criminal investigation division.

In a news conference last Friday evening, DPS Lt. Lonnie Haschel said Wallace was conducting an investigation that led him to the man's home in the Sendera Ranch subdivision in far north Fort Worth.

The home sits directly on the Tarrant/Denton county line.

At the time, Lt. Haschel did not elaborate on what the investigation was about, and DPS still has not.

Wallace has been with DPS since 2009; he was released from the hospital over the weekend and is recovering at home.
