A Mansfield businesswoman who made herself a millionaire during the pandemic is going to prison because she did it illegally.
42-year-old Tamara Starks managed to get around $4.5 million from the government, roughly half of what she applied for under the COVID-19 Payroll Protection Program, called the PPP.
The money was a loan from the government so that businesses could stay open during the pandemic. So long as the owner kept open and everyone on the payroll, the loan would be forgiven. Starks cooked the books for her businesses, submitting more than 100 PPP applications for more than $8 million in forgivable loans.
Now a judge has sentenced Starkes to 7 years in prison and ordered to pay $4,476,523.73 in restitution.
