The document declared Texas free from Mexican rule, inaugurating a nearly ten-year status as a sovereign republic until Texas was welcomed as the 28th state.
One of the big celebrations will be today at the Huntsville grave-site of Sam Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas.
Today is not an official state holiday so state offices remain open. But it is considered a "partial staffing holiday" so some offices may be short-staffed.
