The mayor of Fort Worth has announced a new initiative aimed at preserving green spaces in the city.

The initiative is called 'Good Natured,' and its objective is to bring public and private partners together to shape and enhance greenspace investment over the next century.

As she announced the initiative during her State of the City address, Mayor Mattie Parker noted that Fort Worth has a lot of open space to preserve.

Mayor Parker says the idea is to create a non-profit conservancy so that all parks and open spaces are capable of providing "emotional souvenirs."

Citing data from the Trust for Public Land, the city says it's lagging behind other major cities in per capita park investment and the percentage of residents living within a ten-minute walk to a park.

The initiative has two main objectives in the short term; bringing the city together with private partners to enhance the park system, and preserving at least ten thousand acres of open space over the next five years.
