City leaders in McKinney are debating a new ordinance that would make it illegal to sit, lie down, or camp on sidewalks and other public rights of way in the city’s historic downtown district.

Supporters of the proposal say it’s about public safety and maintaining a business-friendly atmosphere in the busy square, which has grown into a popular destination for restaurants, shopping, and festivals. They argue that blocking sidewalks can create hazards for pedestrians and hurt the area’s economic vitality.

Critics counter that the ordinance would disproportionately impact homeless residents, effectively pushing them out of the city’s most visible spaces without addressing the root causes of homelessness. Some residents at recent council meetings urged the city to put more resources into shelters and outreach rather than enforcement.

If approved, violators could face fines, though city officials say the goal would be to encourage compliance rather than pursue heavy penalties. The measure is expected to come up for a vote later this month.
